Timbers Set to Host LA Galaxy in U.S. Open Cup Round of 16
The Portland Timbers advance to the U.S. Open Cup Round of 16 following a win against the San Jose Earthquakes at Providence Park on Tuesday. The Timbers reach this stage of the tournament for the fourth consecutive year as the Portland club prepares to host the LA Galaxy on June 29th.
Soccer News: The Portland Timbers will play host to the LA Galaxy in the Round of 16 of the 2016 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup at Providence Park on Wednesday, June 29, at 7:30 p.m. (Pacific), it was determined today as regions, pairings and host scenarios were announced by U.S. Soccer.
Tickets for the Round of 16 match against the Galaxy are included as part of Timbers Annual Memberships. Individual tickets are on sale now and available for purchase online.
The winner of the Round of 16 match between Portland and the LA Galaxy will play host to the winner of Real Salt Lake and Seattle Sounders FC in the quarterfinals of the tournament. Additionally, the winner of the West region, which includes the Timbers, Galaxy, Real Salt Lake and Sounders FC, will face the winner of the Plains region, which includes the Colorado Rapids, FC Dallas, Houston Dynamo and Sporting Kansas City, in the semifinals. Following the quarterfinals, a concluding draw will take place on Thursday, July 21, to determine the hosting scenarios for the tournament semifinals and final.
The Timbers advanced to the Round of 16 for a fourth straight year with a 2-0 victory over the San Jose Earthquakes at Providence Park on June 14. Portland has posted a 7-4 record in U.S. Open Cup play since joining MLS in 2011, including the team’s deepest run in the annual competition in 2013, reaching the semifinals against Real Salt Lake. The June 29 match will mark the first time the Timbers and Galaxy meet in U.S. Open Cup play.
The Galaxy enter the match after defeating UPSL side La Maquina FC 4-1 in the fourth round of the tournament, scoring three goals in extra time to advance.
