Improving Soccer Skills With Futsal
Futsal (Five-a-Side Soccer) is the most exciting game to play in the world of soccer. Played by some of the greatest soccer players of all time – Futsal is a great game. Ronaldo – one of the world’s most famous professional soccer players – plays Futsal. With a slightly heavier ball to avoid it bouncing all over, Futsal is usually played indoors on a hard surface such as a basketball court. Futsal provides excellent training for soccer players who are looking to enhance their skills and develop better technique.
One great advantage of Futsal is the enormous amount of touches players have on the ball. With only five players — the action is fast, fun and everyone gets involved. If you haven’t tried Futsal yet, check it out now and if you have, then you know this is great for soccer training and a wonderful game to play. Falcao, the ‘Pelé of futsal’ is an amazing pro player and great fun to watch but Futsal can be enjoyed at all levels from the very beginning player to the highly skilled.

SoccerToday spoke to Martinez to find out more about his soccer background, Rebels SC, and Total Futsal:
Diane Scavuzzo: Why was Total Futsal started and by who?
Abel Martinez: The Rebels SC coaching directors came up with the idea of forming a futsal league. The objective for starting Total Futsal was a way for us to reinforce the Rebels curriculum of developing players who are comfortable with the ball at their feet which translates into a player having the confidence of being able to play in tight spaces in the outdoor game whether it be to create goal scoring opportunities or to get out of tight spaces on defense.
Diane Scavuzzo: How successful was the first year?
Abel Martinez: It was really successful in what we were trying to accomplish. Our players got a chance to play 8 games on a fast surface in a league that provided a competitive environment.
Diane Scavuzzo: When did you first become involved in soccer and why?
Abel Martinez: I have been involved in soccer my entire life. As a native of Peru, soccer is the country’s premier sport. One of my first memories of soccer was Peru playing Italy in the 1982 World Cup. The school put the loud speakers out at recess so we could listen to the game. It was such an exciting experience.
When Peru qualified for the 1982 World Cup, my mother took my brothers and I out to the streets to celebrate with cars honking and people waving their flags. I have always loved to be part of the game, whether it was playing when I was younger in a recreational league, competitive, high school or college and now coaching.
It’s always been my passion and it’s allowed me to travel, learn and give back like helping to start the Kick For Hope Tournament which raised money for charities which helped children in need in Africa.
Diane Scavuzzo: What are your future goals for Total Futsal?
Abel Martinez: Our club’s goal with Total Futsal is to continue to create a competitive league for our club players to take part in order to continue to develop players who are creative and who can master the ball. If they can master the ball, teaching tactics, positioning becomes a lot easier for the outdoor game.
Rebels SC welcome committed soccer players who want to play to the highest level, and that are prepared to train hard, have fun, and develop as a player and person. For more information on this club, please visit their website.
