The first round matches and second round scenarios for the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup have been announced as Sacramento Gold FC are set to face Burlingame Dragons FC. Soccer News: The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup has announced the First Round matches and Second Round scenarios for the 103rd edition of the tournament. Sacramento Gold FC will face Burlingame Dragons FC in the opening round on Wednesday, May 11 at Capital Christian High School.
Sacramento secured automatic qualification for the 2016 tournament by virtue of reaching the West Region Final last season and being one of the final eight teams left in the 2015 NPSL playoffs. This will be the Gold’s second ever appearance in the Open Cup; Sacramento fell to the Portland Timbers U-23 team 3-2 in the First Round of the 2013 tournament.
Burlingame – which competes in the Professional Development League (PDL) – qualified for this year’s tournament by winning the league’s Central Pacific Division in 2015. This will be also the Dragon’s second appearance in the Open Cup, having lost in the First Round to the Sonoma County Sol 2-1 in extra time last year. Burlingame, along with Sacramento, will be seeking the first Open Cup win in club history.
The winner of this May 11 matchup will move on to play the winner of La Máquina FC vs. the Timbers U-23 team on Wednesday, May 18. As with all Gold home games, tickets for Sacramento vs. Burlingame will be $5 and available for purchase at the gate.
