Futsal News: Futsal is a game beloved around the world.
A game played by 99% of the world’s best soccer players — including Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo, who has been crowned the world’s best player by FIFA, Futsal helps sharpen skills with tons of action and touches on the ball in tight spaces on the fast-paced court.
When a youth soccer player transitions back to the outdoor game, every action seems to be easier and confidence soars — but the best reason to play Futsal is that it is so much fun.
The FIFA Futsal World Cup is the international championship for Futsal — and while Brazil has won the honor 5 times, Argentina is the reigning world champion. “What a wonderful opportunity for the players in Southern California to not only tryout for one of the U.S Youth Futsal National Teams but to do so with Sean Bowers and his great staff,” says Tozer, Technical Director of US Youth Futsal.
“Sean Bowers has been one of the top players and former captains of the U.S. National Team and gives so much of his expertise back to the game of futsal and to all the youth players,” says Tozer.
Top players from each State Futsal I.D. camp are invited to participate in the U.S. Youth Futsal National Futsal I.D. Camp, which will be held in Kansas – from July 13 through July 15, 2017.
Ty Stauffer is the Coaching Director, along with Otto Orf, of US Youth Futsal.
Those that attend the national camp are instructed by U.S. Futsal National Team head coach Keith Tozar as well as other national team coaches. In no other setting do players 12-16 years of age get to train with the head coach of the U.S. Futsal National Team.
“We are excited to host another year of our USYF State Futsal ID Camp at Miramar College,” says Sean Bowers, 619 Futsal Founder. “And, we look forward to many of our players representing this area at the U.S. Youth Futsal National ID Camp in Kansas City.”
“Futsal is a key part of the development of players and is becoming more recognized in the United States as a helpful training tool as it incorporates basic skills, tactics and soccer IQ needed for the outdoor game,” says Bowers who was amazed at how little fouling is allowed in Futsal — as compared to soccer.
“619 Futsal has trained over 500 players through our USYF Futsal ID Camp and we are excited to see the level of talent that will be on display over the next month,” says Bowers who earned thirty-six caps and scored five goals while on the U.S. Futsal T
eam from 1996 to 2004. Bowers also was in the 1996 MLS Inaugural Player Draft — picked in the first round by Kansas City.
“Numerous standouts from the San Diego area have been selected to U.S. Youth Futsal National Teams and have traveled to represent the USA in Canada, Costa Rica and Columbia,” says Mike Gentry, 619 Futsal Coach.
“The chance to match skills on Futsal courts — while suiting up in the red, white and blue — and take on other countries youth Futsal players is an amazing achievement and experience,” says Gentry.
“Whenever you can represent your country in a sporting event it is a huge honor as well as a tremendous life experience,” says Tozer.
“The U.S. Youth Futsal National Team program has grown so much over the last four years and will only continue to improve as more and more coaches and players are identified and developed,” says Tozer.
“Congratulations to all of the players participating in San Diego and wishing them all the very best during their trials,” says Tozer. “Looking forward to our USYF National I.D. Trials in Kansas City in July and to see and train 400 of the best players nationally!”
As players prepare for the regional or state ID camps, it is important to remain relaxed and play your game.
“Be creative, show your soccer IQ, love what you’re doing and have fun,” said Bowers. Remember you have be both an offensive and defensive player.
When asked about the difference in physicality between the outdoor game, Bowers highlights his first experience with the U.S. Futsal National Team and his reaction to the difference aspects of the game.
“I was called up to the national team in 1996 for a trip to Brazil,” says Bowers. “I had never played or heard of futsal and when we got to Brazil and played our first game I was very perplexed why I was called up. I was 6’2” and 195 lbs. and just came off my first year in the MLS as a defender where fouling and being physical is part of the game.”
“Futsal, as I learned the hard way, is a completely different game and there was zero tolerance in being physical when competing in the game of futsal — for that alone I wondered why I was called up,” says Bowers.
“But it made me a better player and I learned so many things that helped me be more successful in the MLS,” says Bowers. “Futsal is about movement and being technical in small places and being physical, unlike outdoor soccer, is not part of the game.”
