USD Women’s Soccer Team Earns Four WCC Honors
The University of San Diego Women’s Soccer team received four WCC awards.
College Soccer News: Summer Mason was named to the All-WCC first team as four University of San Diego players earned conference honors Tuesday.
Along with Mason’s first-team honor, Amber Michel and Tara Meier were named to the All-WCC second team, and Natalie Copenhaver earned WCC All-Freshman Team recognition.
The group was instrumental in helping lead the Toreros to a third-place result in WCC play – the team’s highest finish in conference play since 2011.
It is the first first-team honor of Mason’s career after being named an honorable mention in 2016. She led the Toreros in points (19), goals (9) and game-winning goals (3). Mason tied for third among WCC players in goals, fifth in game-winning goals and eighth in points.
Michel had an excellent season in goal for the Toreros, playing nearly every minute and holding a 1.62 goals-against average and .754 save percentage while making 95 saves.
She made a then-career high 10 saves against Texas A&M on Aug. 20, then eclipsed that mark with 11 stops at BYU to lead USD to a 2-1 victory.
Meier established herself as one of the conference’s best defenders during 2017. She anchored a Toreros backline that held conference opponents to 13 goals.
Meier chipped in offensively, tying for the second-most assists of all WCC players in conference games with four.
Copenhaver made an immediate impact during her freshman campaign and solidified her spot at outside back during the conference season.
The future remains bright for the Toreros as Michel, Meier and Copenhaver will be among eight returning starters and 20 letter winners in 2018.
