Utah Surf SC Adds Davis & Bills
Youth Soccer News: Utah Surf Soccer Club Continues to Grow – Adding Key Staff
Continuing their momentum as one of the fastest-growing clubs in Utah, San Diego Surf Soccer Club affiliate Utah Surf SC today announced two staff additions for the 2013-2014 season. Mark Davis and Spencer Bills join the program in key positions that will substantially upgrade the club’s ability to provide the best training and development options for Utah athletes.
Mark Davis joins Utah Surf as Director of Player Development. Mark is head coach for both the men’s and women’s soccer programs at BYU-Hawaii. In his third year as head coach of the men’s program, he led them to their best-ever record during the 2013 season. He was named Coach of the Year in the Pac West Conference and was recently awarded the job as head coach for the women’s team. Mark holds a bachelor’s degree from BYU-Hawaii and is working on a master’s degree in coaching and athletic administration.
Davis has been playing and coaching soccer for most of his life. In addition to playing one season at BYU-Hawaii, Davis played at Iowa Western College where, as team captain, he led the team to a conference championship in 2009. Davis attended Copper Hills High School where he started on the varsity squad all four years and served as team captain for two.
Spencer Bills joins Utah Surf as Academy Director, overseeing a program which will include players from U6 through U11. Spencer holds a USSF ‘B’ license, National Youth License, NSCAA Regional GK License and NSCAA Specialty Diploma.
Spencer began coaching youth soccer 15 years ago at Sparta United Soccer Club in Sandy, Utah. He served most recently as Sparta’s Boys Academy Director of Coaching (2008-2014) and as a staff coach. His involvement at Sparta also included a role assisting with the Sparta Cup. Additionally, Spencer served as head coach at West Jordan High School from 2005-2007 and currently assists Utah Surf coach Dan Watkins coaching Westlake High School’s boys program.
His playing experience includes four years in the men’s program at the University of Utah. He grew up playing club soccer at Sparta United and played four years of high school at West Jordan High.
In addition to his responsibilities managing the Academy program at Utah Surf, Spencer will help the club launch its first ever tournament in the summer of 2014.
“We are extremely excited to add Spencer and Mark to our staff,” said Utah Surf President, Brady Wycherly. “Their skills and experience will help take Utah Surf to the next level. Besides that, they are great people.”
“The ultimate goal of this program is one I believe in strongly – to develop great players and great kids,” Bills told SoccerNation News in an earlier interview. “The future for Utah Surf is very bright and I am excited to be here,” added Davis.
