UWS News: New York Surf Soccer Club (1-0-0, 3 points) played its inaugural match in United Women’s Soccer (UWS) on Sunday, edging Western New York Flash (0-1-1, 1 point) at SUNY Maritime College, 1-0.
“I thought the team played well for just getting started,” said Head Coach Michele Canning. “We didn’t know what to expect with only a few practices under our belt — but the players worked hard and got an important win at home.”
NY Surf jumped out to a one-goal advantage in the 14th minute of the match, and that lone tally would eventually prove to be the difference.
Midfielder Brooke Salmon placed a well-struck corner kick into the penalty area as forward Megan O’Connor finished the service with a one-time shot that found the back of the net.
After registering the go-ahead goal, NY Surf locked it down defensively and was able to record the clean sheet at home.
Recording the shutout for NY Surf was goalkeeper Colleen Hickey, who plays collegiate soccer at Fordham University.
Defender Faith Daly also caught the eye of everyone for her strong performance on the field and earned recognition by the league and was honored with a spot on the UWS TEAM OF THE WEEK for WEEK I.
And, New York Surf defender, Amy Marron, current St. John’s Assistant Coach, was named UWS Team of the Week Honorable Mention.
“New York Surf SC has just started this UWS team and our team has existed for one week,” said Canning.
“I came on board three weeks ago and we held our first practice last Monday,” added Canning who is in her sixth season as Head Coach of New York University (NYU) women’s soccer team.
New York Surf UWS coaching staff also includes Salma Tarik, Head Coach at St Joe’s plus two college Assistant Coaches Jen Leaverton from St John’s and Scott Waddell who also coaches at NYU. Emily Morphitis, Goalie Coach at Hofstra University, is the Goalkeeper Coach for the UWS team.
NY Surf will return to action this Saturday, May 20, when they travel to Western New York to meet the Flash at 5:00 p.m. ET at Niagara University.
