Victor Santillan Named NJYS Recreation Coach of the Year

His Dedication to Youth Soccer Deserves Recognition

New Jersey Youth Soccer (NJYS) continues its 34th Annual NJYS Awards celebration, proudly recognizing Victor Santillan of Florham Park Youth Soccer Association as the 2021 NJYS Recreation Coach of the Year. Known for his passion, leadership, and commitment to growing the game, Santillan has made a lasting impact on youth soccer in New Jersey.

As part of his recognition, Santillan had the opportunity to participate in an exclusive interview with Gotham FC defender Estelle Johnson, further highlighting his contributions to the youth soccer community.

A Coach Who Puts Players First

“It is an honor to be recognized by New Jersey Youth Soccer as the 2021 Recreation Coach of the Year,” said Santillan. “Nothing makes me prouder than seeing kids play soccer—not only in the fall but throughout the year. Watching them smile while playing this beautiful game is the reason I coach.”

Santillan is more than just a youth soccer coach—he is an ambassador for the game, dedicated to ensuring that all kids have a place to play. In his community, recreational soccer previously ended at third grade, leaving older kids without opportunities to continue playing. Recognizing the need for change, Santillan worked tirelessly to expand recreation soccer in his town, ensuring that hundreds of kids now can access the game at all ages.

Coaching with Heart: A Game-Changing Moment

Santillan’s philosophy is built on fair play, sportsmanship, and inclusion. One of his most memorable coaching moments came when he helped a player overcome challenges and experience the joy of scoring a goal. During a game, he orchestrated a moment where players from both teams worked together to help the young athlete find the back of the net.

The result? Pure joy.

“There wasn’t a dry eye in the house,” said Santillan. “Moments like these remind us what youth soccer is all about—building confidence, friendships, and unforgettable memories.”

Growing the Game & Inspiring the Next Generation

Santillan’s player-first approach focuses on helping kids learn and grow through their love of soccer. Whether he’s coaching on the field, advocating for more recreational opportunities, or fostering a positive environment for young athletes, his impact extends far beyond the game itself.

As NJYS continues its virtual awards celebration, Santillan’s story serves as an inspiration to parents, coaches, and youth soccer leaders everywhere. His dedication to making soccer accessible, inclusive, and fun embodies the true spirit of the game.
