Western New York Flash Defeat Sky Blue FC at Sahlen’s Stadium
WNY Flash topped Sky Blue FC at Sahlen’s Stadium after going up by four goals in the first half of play. Jess McDonald tallied two goals on the night as the Flash prepare to take on the Boston Breakers in Week 7 of the NWSL. Sky Blue head to Chicago to take on the Red Stars who currently are tied in points with league-leading Washington Spirit.
Soccer News: The Western New York Flash defeated Sky Blue FC 5-2 at Sahlen’s Stadium on Saturday night in Week 6 of the NWSL. WNY Flash scored four goals in the first half as Jess McDonald led the Flash with a brace along with three other players adding to the scoreline.
In the 5th minute, Jaelene Hinkle sent in a corner kick that met with McDonald to open up the scoring. Samantha Mewis doubled the lead in the 19th minute off an attempted clearance from Nikki Stanton that landed just in front of the area. Mewis waited and put the ball in the back of the net past Sky Blue goalkeeper Caroline Stanley. McDonald scored her second goal of the match just before the break to send WNY Flash into halftime up by four.
U.S. National Team member Kelley O’Hara fired a shot past Sabrina D’Angelo in the 55th minute to get Sky Blue on the board, but the Flash continued to add to the scoreline as Michaela Hahn got her first professional goal in the 61st minute.
Sky Blue FC was awarded a penalty kick in the 87th minute to cut the lead to 5-2 off a Sarah Killion conversion. Jaelene Hinkle and Alanna Kennedy each recored two assists, and goalkeeper D’Angelo made three saves in the WNY Flash win at home.
“The credit tonight must go to Western New York,” said Christy Holly, Sky Blue FC head coach. “They executed their game plan well and punished us for our complacency.
The Flash will remain home in Week 7 as they play host to U.S. National Team member and former Flash player Whitney Engen and the Boston Breakers.
Sky Blue FC travels to take on the Chicago Red Stars next Sunday night before returning home to Yurcak Field on Saturday, June 11th, to host FC Kansas City.
