WNT Flash Set to Host Thailand National Team on Saturday
The WNY Flash will host the Thailand Women’s National Team at Demske Sports Complex in an international break matchup on Saturday. The friendly match will keep the Flash in stride heading into the final week of the regular season where the WNY need a win or draw to clinch the final playoff berth.
NWSL Soccer News: The Western New York Flash will host the Thailand Women’s National Team in a friendly match on Saturday at 7 p.m. ET. The match marks the first-ever meeting between WNY and Thailand and will be the Flash’s lone game before returning to NWSL action next weekend.
The Flash are coming off a 3-2 loss t0 second place Portland Thorns FC at Providence Park last Sunday. Jessica McDonald and Lynn Williams each scored to tally their ninth and tenth goals of the season to keep them both in the hunt for the NWSL’s Golden Boot Award.
Thailand is coming off a match against the United States Women’s National Team this past Thursday. The USWNT dominated 9-0 with Carli Lloyd leading the way with 3 goals and four assists, while Thailand goalkeeper Yada Sengyong made 7 saves in the losing effort. The match also marked the conclusion of Heather O’Reilly’s international career.
Thailand attended its first Women’s World Cup at the senior level in 2015 in Canada. They notched a 3-2 victory against the Ivory Coast, but exited out of the tournament at the end of group play. Thailand’s win featured two goals from Orathai Srimanee and one from Thanatta Chawong, both of whom are will be suiting up on Saturday.
The Flash will be returning to the Demske Sports Complex, which was the previous home of WNY back when they were known as the Buffalo Flash. The Flash used the stadium in 2010 for a season that saw the team go undefeated and win the USL W-League Championship.
At the international break, the Flash sit in 4rd place in the NWSL standings with 29 points, one behind the Chicago Red Stars. Western New York sits two points ahead of Seattle Reign FC, and need to record a win or draw to clinch the final playoff spot for the Flash.
Following Saturday’s game against Thailand, the Flash will travel to Boston to face the Breakers on Saturday, September 24, at Jordan Field to conclude the 2016 NWSL regular season.
