WNY Flash Defeat Orlando Pride at Home to Extend Home Winning Streak
WNY Flash defeated Orlando Pride to extend its home winning streak to three games as the club now sits on top of the table tied with the Chicago Red Stars. Makenzy Doniak scored off an assist from Jessica Donald as the New York club prepares to host the Portland next Friday.
Soccer News: The Western New York Flash extended their home stand win streak to three as they took down visiting Orlando Pride. Rookie Makenzy Doniak netted the game-winner to put the Flash on the top of the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) table with 15 points.
The Flash came flying out of the gates when forward Jessica McDonald sent a pass through the Pride defensive line for Doniak, who hit a shot that ricocheted off the far post and into the back of the net in just the fourth minute – the first of her professional career. In the 22nd minute, the Pride’s Laura Alleway jumped into Flash goalkeeper Britt Eckerstrom to head the ball that Orlando’s Jasmyne Spencer tapped in, but it was waived off as an offsides call. Doniak’s goal remained the difference, despite both sides creating quality opportunities, including Spencer ripping a long range shot on frame in the first half that Eckerstrom was perfectly positioned to catch.
Eckerstrom came up with some big saves, especially in the 38th minute when she made an excellent double save. She first dove to deny the Pride’s Alex Morgan and then again seconds later when the rebound was sent back in which the Flash’s Alanna Kennedy cleared away to safety. Eckerstrom has yet to concede a goal in her professional career and extends her clean sheet streak from her college career at Penn State to now 10 matches.
The Western New York Flash looks to make it four in a row on June 17, as they host U.S. Women’s National Team laden Portland Thorns FC. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. ET at Rochester Rhinos Stadium.
