Last Saturday night’s game pitted Miami’s Surge against the Florida Sol from Fleming Island.
This match up was a hard fought battle with the lead changing often.
The Sol scored first and the 0-1 held up the remainder of the half. The second half — in a spritz of light drizzle — saw the Surge tie the game in the 47th minute off a goal by Iris Dunn assisted by Nicole Baldassini.
The Sol then scored their own goal just one minute later. Not to be deterred the Surge came back on the ensuing kickoff with a long shot by Aline Dalmedico making it 2-2.
Dunn found the back of the net again in the 61st minute and the 3-2 held up to finish out the night.
Who was on the WPSL FC Surge Roster?
Starters were GK Morgan Lang (American University) defenders Alex Brandan (Carson Newman), Dalanda Ouendeno (UM), Nicole Rafols (Barry) and Shelby Denkert (Campbell), Midfielders Tuany Miguel (Union College), April Perry (FIU), Flor Baldassini (Stetson), and Mel Monteagudo (UF) with forwards Dunn (WKU) and Dalmedico (Union College). Subbing in were Sol Baldassini (Georgia College), Morgan Armstrong (St Thomas Aquinas High School), Nicole Baldassini (NJIT), Sammy Lujan (FAU), Karina Radice and GK Cristina Garwacki (St Thomas University).
The Sol coaches voted Iris Dunn as Player of the Game while the Surge chose Autumn Woodard from the Sol.
Sunday’s match saw the Surge hot and tired after only a 17 hour rest, meeting new WPSL team DSA WFC from Daytona Beach.
The Surge pressed DSA often in the first half unable to connect with the goal but keeping two DSA goalkeepers busy. Monteagudo scored early in the second half off a nice ball from Sol Baldassini.
While some fans might get a bit confused, the Surge really does have three sisters on the squad this season.
Just three minutes later, a messy clearance in the back caused the referee to award a PK to DSA converted by Leah Emaus. The score would remain 1-1 for the next 40 minutes as both teams took their chances.
Also on the roster for game 2 were Alyssa Reardon and Maria Vega (Barry). DSA voted April Perry as POG with the Surge honoring Emaus.
Coaches Ramiro Vengoechea and Eddie Hernandez were pleased with the overall play on the weekend but noted some areas that need work at practice this week.
The Surge finished week two in 2nd place behind Tampa Bay Hellenic in the Sunshine Region of the WPSL.
