LA Galaxy SD Records Win in Home Opening Weekend

LA Galaxy San Diego (LAGSD) prepares to head on the road following a win and loss during Week 2 of the WPSL. LAGSD sits with one win, two draws and a loss during the first two action-packed weeks of the 2017 campaign.
WPSL Soccer News: Los Angeles Galaxy San Diego (LAGSD) recorded a win and draw over the weekend as the Women’s Premier Soccer League (WPSL) club impresses during their inaugural season.
Friday’s matchup was the home opening WPSL game for the LAGSD Women’s Team with supporters providing an electric atmosphere at Maffucci Field, Army and Navy Academy in Carlsbad, CA. The match welcomed over 600 fans and a brilliant game-winner by the hosts.
The match started with high tempo and after a few chances on goal LAGSD were able to open the scoring with Huli DeArmas serving a ball to Bridget Daley for the finish. Phoenix del Sol was able to capitalize on missed opportunities to clear the ball by LAGSD as the visitors brought the game level at the conclusion of the first half.
After relentless surges forward in the second half, a cross from Makaela Thompson was heal flicked into the goal by Katie O’Laughlin to give LAGSD the game-winning goal.
“I was very pleased with the team’s performance,” said LAGSD head coach Greg LaPorte. “It was a great way to open at home. The match started with a high pace tempo, the players were really feeding off the crowds energy. I am still checking ESPN’s Sports Center Goal of Week for Katie’s finish, unbelievable!”
Michael Duggan – LA Galaxy’s San Diego Director of Soccer Operations said, “This was a very proud moment for the club and everyone involved. Fantastic turnout with about 600 soccer fans watching — and it is only going to get better. The next really bid match is on July 1st when we take on San Diego SeaLions at 6 PM at the Army and Navy in Carlsbad Village.”
In LAGSD’s second matchup of the weekend, FC Tucson provided a good test for the hosts. Despite the 0-0 draw, San Diego recorded a point in a very attainable win after numerous chances were not converted.
LAGSD heads on the road to take on FC Pacific this Wednesday and then Strikers FC-South Coast on Saturday.
The San Diego club will then return home the following weekend for the return game against FC Pacific on Friday, June 30, at 7:00 p.m. PT. The highly anticipated local derby against the San Diego SeaLions is then scheduled for Saturday, July 1, at 6:00 p.m. PT. Both home matches will be played at the Army and Navy Academy in Carlsbad.
