WPSL Soccer News: The San Diego SeaLions clinched the 2017 WPSL PacSouth Division title with an dominating 4-1 victory over FC Pacific on Sunday. The win marked the sixth time in the last seven years that the SeaLions will clinch a berth to the playoffs.
San Diego fell just shy of a fourth National title last season, losing the championship match in Columbus, Ohio, to professional club Boston Breakers’ developmental team.
“We have felt all along that we have something to prove this year,” said SeaLions assistant coach Lu Snyder. “More important, we’re having fun proving it.”
The win pushes San Diego’s record to 7-0-0. The SeaLions have scored 23 goals so far in 2017 while conceding just four.
Forward Kiera Bocchino (UCSD) scored twice in the second half to close the match, bringing her season total to four, after Angelina Hix (MiraCosta) and Caroline Shevlin (St. Mary’s) gave the SeaLions a 2-0 halftime lead. FC Pacific scored in the 80th minute but never mounted a sustained attacking effort in the face of relentless pressure from San Diego.
The SeaLions head on the road this Saturday, July 1, against new San Diego rival squad LA Galaxy – SD, at Army-Navy Sports Complex in Carlsbad, CA. Kickoff is set for at 6:00 p.m. PT.
The SeaLions return home this Sunday, July 2, in a rematch versus FC Pacific. That game begins at 2:00 p.m. PT at Manchester Stadium on the campus of Cathedral Catholic High School.
