WPSL Soccer News: After a gutsy season-opening win in Los Angeles three weeks ago, the San Diego Sealions head to Arizona this weekend for a double header versus rivals FC Tucson and Phoenix Del Sol.
“Despite the long break between matches, I don’t think we’re at all rusty, because we know we haven’t reached our potential on the field,” said SeaLions defender Caroline Shevlin. “These desert teams are always tough opponents.”
FC Tucson (1-1-0) topped FC Pacific, but lost to Strikers-South Coast, whom San Diego beat 1-0 thanks to a 92nd minute goal by Angelina Hix. Meanwhile, Phoenix Del Sol (0-1-1) tied the Strikers but lost to Pacific. The Sealions (1-0-0) sit in second place in the WPSL PacSouth Division, one point behind the Strikers.
“New players have stepped up. Samantha Staab and Monica Dolinsky fit in well to the new system,” said San Diego Co-Captain Rosie Tantillo-Colon. “Monica balances out the middle, both defending and pushing forward, while Sam distributes the ball well out of the back, to start and support our attacks.”
Friday’s game versus FC Tucson kicks off at 7:30 p.m. at Kino Sports Complex North Stadium in Tucson. Saturday’s match against Phoenix Del Sol starts at 7:30 p.m. at Reach 11 Sports Complex in Phoenix.
The SeaLions open at home on San Diego Soccer Weekend next Saturday, June 17, at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, June 18, at 2:00 p.m., when they host these same Arizona clubs.
