San Diego SeaLions Look To Close The 2016 WPSL Season with Victories
The San Diego SeaLions look to close out the regular WPSL season with victories as they travel to Los Angeles for matches with FC Pacific and L.A. Salsa. Coached by Jen Lalor, this WPSL women’s soccer team is undefeated.
Soccer News: The unbeaten WPSL San Diego SeaLions (7-0-1) will try to remain just that – unbeaten – as they travel to Los Angeles this weekend for rematches with both FC Pacific (2-6-1) and L.A. Salsa (3-5-0), to close out the regular season.
The Numbers: The San Diego SeaLions have earned a total of 22 points so far reflecting the track record of 7 wins, 0 losses and 1 tie. The team has scored 21 goals and only allowed 4 goals in.
L.A. Salsa is expected to be a strong contender and looking for revenge after their embarrassing 5-1 loss. If losing was not enough to inspire the team to dig deep, the humiliating series of red cards they received for starting a brawl in San Diego last Sunday will probably push their fighting spirit into full force.
“We consider these matches to be tuneups for the playoffs,” says Jen Lalor, SeaLions head coach. “They will be tests on our ability to maintain our focus and poise, as well as our cohesiveness when we control and move the ball.”
This will be the fifth time in the last six seasons that the San Diego SeaLions have gone to the WPSL playoffs, and it’s no secret that they want a repeat of 2013’s national championship season.
“We’ve improved every match so far,” says Lu Snyder, SeaLions’ assistant coach and former goalkeeper. “And, good things will happen if we can continue that.”
Whose scoring for the SeaLions?
- SeaLion Angelina Hix (Mira Costa College) leads San Diego with seven goals, and Elise Britt (UCLA) has four.
- Rosie Tantillo-Colon (USC) has two.
- Twelve different SeaLions have scored this season as the SeaLions have outscored opponents 21-4.
San Diego’s defense, backed by Goalkeeper Kaycee Gunion (CSU-San Marcos) and the SeaLion back line of Grace Shevlin (SDSU), Leigh Ann Brown (USD), Caroline Shevlin (St. Mary’s), and Karina Cisneros (Chapman) have given up just four goals in eight matches, for a 0.5 goals-against average (tied for sixth in the WPSL), and boast the WPSL’s lowest shots-on-goal-per-game average.
Unfortunately, several players will be absent for the games this weekend. “The weekend will be a test of our depth, that’s for sure,” added Lalor. “But a test is an opportunity.”
Upcoming Games:
- Saturday, July 16th match against FC Pacific kicks off at 5:00 pm at Tesoro High School Stadium, 1 Tesoro Creek Road, Rancho Santa Margarita, CA 92688
