Undefeated Xolos in San Diego Surf Cup Semifinals
Xoloitzcuintles U17, beats Seattle United, finishes group undefeated
The 2016 San Diego Surf Cup is a highly regarded tournament featuring some of the best youth clubs in the United States. With hundreds of college coaches watching from the sidelines, the famous youth soccer tournament known as the Surf Cup kicked on on Saturday, with the semifinals and finals held today.
The Xoloitzcuintles won the Under-15 and Under-16 categories in the 2014 version of the tournament. It was the first time Club Tijuana participated in the competition. Now in its third time it wants to vie for another shot a title.
Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles is in the San Diego Surf Cup semifinals. The Fuerzas Basicas Under-17 team coached by Gilberto Mora clinched a spot in the next round of its bracket with a 4-1 win against Seattle United Sunday.
The young Xoloitzcuintles got a pair of goals in each half of the third group stage match at the San Diego Polo Fields. Saul Patron (16th minute), Chris Torres (18th), David Ramo (36th) and Kiko Olvera (38th) scored for the Xoloitzcuintles. Oscar Harding (49th) scored for Seattle United.

Mora’s team will play Strikers FC in the Super Black Bracket C semis Monday Aug. 1 at 9:45 a.m. (Pacific) at the SoCal Sports Complex in Oceanside, Calif.
The Under-17 team finished the group stage unbeaten after beating Baltimore Bays (3-2), Arsenal FC (1-0) and then Seattle United.
Club Tijuana’s Fuerzas Basicas Under-16 finished participation in the international competition that attracts more than 450 college scouts from throughout the United States.
Coach Ignacio Ruvalcaba’s team played to a 3-1 win against Los Angeles United in its final group stage. But the win was not enough to reach the next round. The Under-16 squad finished second in its Super Black group behind Albion SC of San Diego, a team that beat Club Tijuana Under-16 (1-0) Saturday. Rvalcaba’s team beat Fullerton Rangers 1-0 in its first match.
Note: The 2016 soccerloco San Diego Surf Cup Tournament starts the new soccer year for US Youth Soccer’s Southern California region known as Cal South. Teams were placed according to the new year, birth year age groups for the 2016/2017 season for Boys and Girls in the U-10 through U-19 age groups.
