Soccer News: Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles Women’s team opened the Naciones Unidas por el Futbol tournament with a 7-2 loss against Atletico Madrid, the Copa de la Reyna champions, Thursday.
Coach Andrea Rodebaugh’s team is the only Mexican team participating in the tournament that runs until Aug. 24.
The female Xoloitzcuintles got a pair of goals from Yasmin Aguas and Angelica Hix.
The women’s team, which is preparing to play in the Mexican Federation’s top league, will also face Club Rayo Vallecano (Aug. 20), Real Zaragoza (Aug. 23) and Valencia CF (Aug. 24.).
The team has a handful of experienced players such as Carolina Jamarillo, a 2014 Under-20 World Cup participant playing for Mexico and Gold Medalist in the 2014 Central American games. Jackie Gonzalez is also on the team. She is part of Paraguay’s national team. Veronica Perez played with Deportivo Compostela in Spain’s second division. Valeria Barajas is a bronze medalist in the Mexican Under-17 National Olympics playing with the Baja California all-star team. And there is also team captain Karla Perez, who is a veteran with Club Tijuana’s female squad.
“We went into the tournament very excited,” Jamarillo said. “We go in there with all the desire and sacrifice to represent Club Tijuana well. I’ve always dreamed of representing my country and my team Xolos. We are very proud because I watched the men’s teams since I was a kid and I’d like for one day to have a professional league in Mexico. And that is exactly what we are preparing for with this tournament.”
Meanwhile, team captain Karla Perez talked about the importance of facing first division teams in Spain.
“It is an incredible opportunity for us. We are very lucky to have Club Tijuana’s help. I tell my teammates to enjoy every game and every moment with the mentality of making something big happen.”
