Lake Grove/Newfield Huskies Win the Girls-Under-15 Arch Capital Group Cup
New York Youth Soccer News: The team gets their nickname from the UConn Huskies, where coach Cathy Cambria-Palm starred as an All-American in the 1990s
A back-and-forth battle between two Long Island Junior Soccer League (LIJSL) teams in the Girls-Under-15 Arch Capital Group Cup final needed to be decided in the shootout. The Lake Grove/Newfield Huskies and Island Trees Shooting Stars tied 1-1 after regulation and 2-2 in overtime.
Lake Grove/Newfield won, 4-2, in the shootout. Emily Caso, Abby Cornelia, Emma Kogel and Makayla Palm converted the penalty kicks for Lake Grove/Newfield.
Faith Ferraro scored the Lake Grove/Newfield goal in regulation, assisted by Kathy Lopez. Then it was the same combination, Lopez scoring and Ferraro assisting, on the overtime goal.
“It was a pretty even match. Our girls have really worked hard this season and they have faced a lot of bumps, with many injuries, but these girls continued to work hard for each other,” commented Lake Grove/Newfield coach Cathy Cambria-Palm. “They play with a lot of heart and they play for each other and that makes a big difference. We didn’t make it to the final last year and these girls wanted to prove to themselves that they deserved to be here and to take home a title.”
The Huskies receive their team name as their coach was an All-American with the UConn Huskies. As a teenager, she played with the LIJSL’s Sachem Tomahawks and that team won the Patricia Louise Masotto Cup in 1987 as Girls-Under-16 national champions.
Lake Grove/Newfield also received the Howard Rubenstein Sportsmanship Award as determined by the game officials.
