Club Tijuana debuts in Copa MX with a win over Murcielagos FC
Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles manager Miguel Herrera made his 2016 Clausura Copa MX debut with a 2-0 win against Second Division side Murcielagos FC Tuesday night. Herrera relied on the Club Tijuana young players, using up to five from the club’s farm system in his starting lineup in the Group 2 match.
Midfielder Luis Gerardo Chavez, who recently turned 20, was one of them. He was part of the play that led to a Club Tijuana penalty kick early in the second half. He then stepped up and converted the penalty to give the Xoloitzcuintles a 1-0 lead. Herrera highlighted the great work that has been done in youth system. He mentioned how these young players all part of his 25-man first team roster.
The Xoloitzcuintles backfield was well taken care of with young Mexican National Team goalkeeper Gibran Lajud. In the central defense position, Xoloitzcuintles youth product Christian Torres was featured alongside the experience of Michael Orozco and Elio Castro.
On the wings, Kevin Gutierrez made his Club Tijuana debut after joining from Club Queretaro. And another youth player, Paul Arriola created danger most of the game.
Brazilian midfielder Juninho brought balance to the Xoloitzcuintles in the center of the field in his first official start. And Chavez along with Argentine midfielder Gonzalo Diaz led the charge forward. An Amando Moreno and Jose Alberto Garcia combination was a pair of young stars who combined well to create a lot of problems for the Murcielagos FC defense.
Los Mochis, Sinaloa native Alonso Escoboza got the opportunity to play infront of his family. And he gave them something to cheer about as a second half substitute. Escoboza scored the goal to seal the win for the visiting Xoloitzcuintles in the 83rd minute.
Club Tijuana will once again take on this Murcielagos FC side next Tuesday Jan. 26 at Estadio Caliente in Week 2 of the Copa MX. But before that, it will return to LIGA MX action in a Week 3 match against Santos Laguna Friday at Estadio Caliente.
