Carrie Taylor: Breaking Barriers as the First Female Coach in USL Championship

The Landscape of Female Coaches in Men’s Soccer

In a sport where female coaches are significantly underrepresented, especially in men’s professional leagues, Carrie Taylor’s appointment as the first female assistant coach in the USL Championship marks a pivotal moment in soccer history.

The coaching realm within men’s professional soccer has historically been dominated by men. In the NCAA, for instance, a staggering 95% of men’s sports teams are led by male head coaches, leaving a mere 5% to their female counterparts.

This disparity underscores the significance of Taylor’s role with the San Diego Loyal SC, where she not only challenges the status quo but also paves the way for future female coaches in men’s soccer.

Landon Donovan’s Groundbreaking Decision

Landon Donovan, co-founder and head coach of San Diego Loyal SC, made a landmark decision by appointing Carrie Taylor as his first assistant coach. Donovan, a U.S. soccer legend, emphasized that Taylor’s selection was based solely on her qualifications and expertise. He stated, “I picked Carrie because she was the most qualified person for the job.” This decision highlights Donovan’s commitment to meritocracy and sets a precedent for inclusivity in soccer coaching.

The great, highly respectable aspect of this decision is that Donovan did not select Taylor because of her gender but her talent and experience.

Carrie Taylor’s Extensive Coaching Background

Taylor brings over three decades of diverse coaching experience to the table. Her career includes roles as an assistant coach for women’s soccer teams at Temple University and Xavier University, as well as serving as the head coach responsible for establishing the first men’s soccer team at Mt. Saint Joseph University.  Her extensive background showcases her versatility and dedication to the sport, making her appointment to the San Diego Loyal SC both groundbreaking and well-deserved.

A Step Towards Greater Representation

Taylor’s appointment is a significant stride towards addressing the gender imbalance in soccer coaching. While women’s participation in soccer has grown, leadership positions, especially in men’s teams, remain predominantly male. Taylor’s role challenges traditional norms and inspires a future where coaching positions are determined by skill and experience, irrespective of gender.

Female Coaches Coaching Men’s Soccer

Carrie Taylor’s journey with the San Diego Loyal SC is more than just a personal achievement; it’s a beacon of progress in the soccer community. Her story exemplifies the possibilities that arise when talent and dedication are recognized beyond gender biases.

As the only female coach in the MLS, USL, or NISA at the time of her appointment, Taylor’s presence is not just a milestone but a catalyst for change, encouraging more women to pursue coaching roles in men’s professional soccer.

Taylor has always been an advocate of women in soccer and helped pioneer the first Women in Soccer event in San Diego in 2017 working with Diane Scavuzzo.
