New Jersey Built Her. The Women’s Game Elevated Her: Denise Reddy Enters NJ Hall of Fame
U.S. Women’s National Team assistant coach Denise Reddy proudly calls herself a “Jersey Girl” — a fitting description for the UEFA Pro Licensed coach whose career began on New Jersey fields and has since influenced the women’s game at the highest international levels.
On February 1, New Jersey Youth Soccer honored one of its most accomplished and influential figures, inducting Denise Reddy into the New Jersey Youth Soccer Hall of Fame. The recognition celebrates a lifetime of achievement as an elite player, trailblazing professional, and respected leader within U.S. Soccer.
“I am extremely honored be inducted in the New Jersey Youth Soccer Hall of Fame. As a true Jersey girl, it is so fulfilling to have the people who know me and have been a part of my journey nominate me to this prestigious honor,” said Reddy.
Few coaches embody the full arc of the sport the way Reddy does — her Hall of Fame induction reflects not only what she achieved on the field, but those she has helped throughout her journey.
“Everyone’s journey, especially in soccer, is so different and sometimes what looks like obstacles are really learning and growing opportunities.”

“I have been through many challenges throughout my playing and coaching career,” added Reddy. “And, I have learned challendes are absolutely necessary if you want to become the best player, coach, and person you can be.”
A New Jersey Native
A native of Hazlet, New Jersey, Reddy’s soccer path was defined early by leadership and competitive excellence. She starred at Rutgers University from 1988–1991, serving as a two-time team captain and earning NSCAA Second Team All-America honors in her senior season.
After her graduation from Rutgers, when opportunities in the women’s professional game were seriously limited in the USA, Reddy’s love of the game and ability pushed her beyond domestic borders.

A Trailblazing Professional Career in Europe
Following her collegiate career, Reddy became part of a pioneering generation of American players who helped elevate women’s football abroad. She spent more than a decade playing professionally in Sweden, most notably with Malmö DFF, where she was team captain for seven seasons.
Reddy played for Malmö from 1996 to 2005, serving as team captain for seven seasons (1999–2005). As a commanding central defender, she made over 300 appearances, scored 35 goals, helped the club win the 1997 Swedish Cup, and guided Malmö to the UEFA Women’s Cup semifinals.
From Soccer Player to Architect of the Game
Reddy’s transition into coaching was seamless and deeply rooted in service to the sport. Even before her playing career ended, she began coaching within New Jersey’s Olympic Development Program, maintaining strong ties to youth soccer while building a foundation in player development.
Her coaching career has spanned multiple countries and elite environments, including the NWSL, Scandinavian leagues, and top European clubs.
In the United States, Reddy served as head coach of Sky Blue FC and held assistant coaching roles with the Washington Spirit and Chicago Red Stars, contributing to player development, professional standards, and league growth during formative years of the NWSL.
Internationally, Reddy coached in Sweden and Denmark, most notably with Linköpings FC and Vittsjö GIK, where her teams consistently punched above their weight. She also coached at Chelsea FC Women, working alongside Emma Hayes for four years during one of the most dominant eras in English women’s football.
A Trusted Voice Within U.S. Soccer
In May 2024, Reddy’s career came full circle when she was named Assistant Coach of the U.S. Women’s National Team, joining Emma Hayes’ newly assembled technical staff.
Within the USWNT environment, Reddy is widely respected for her defensive expertise and meticulous attention to detail. A former successful central defender herself, she brings a deep understanding of positional play, game management, and collective organization to the international stage.
Reddy is deeply involved in training design, opponent analysis, match preparation, and player development, collaborating closely with Hayes to help shape a modern, adaptable U.S. team identity. Inside the program, she is regarded as a co-coach and trusted strategic voice, not simply a supporting presence.
For U.S. Soccer, Reddy represents the value of global experience paired with domestic roots — a coach who understands both the international game and the pathways that develop elite American players.
Emma Hayes and Colleagues Pay Tribute
During the Hall of Fame ceremony, a tribute video highlighted the breadth of Reddy’s impact. Among the voices honoring her was Emma Hayes, who spoke candidly about their relationship and shared journey:
“I’m so proud of you — not just for being an amazing friend and a loyal assistant. I don’t think of you like that. You’re a co-coach. You’ve helped shape not just my coaching journey, but the lives of countless players. Your attention to detail is second to none. Congratulations, my friend. You deserve everything.”
Other members of the U.S. Women’s National Team staff echoed those sentiments, praising Reddy not only as an elite coach, but as a leader and human being whose influence is felt daily within the program.
